Tom Barrington Leather Goods - Our Story
People have been using leather as both an object of utility and design since as far back as man began recording time, maybe longer, but previous to that nobody was bothering to record time so I would guess they weren't documenting their leather usage either. Perhaps they were too busy fending off wild prey and worrying about finding their next meal more than they were writing things down.
Everything from loin cloths, water bags, shelters, coin bags, all the way to belts, saddles, wallets, satchels, sword handles and just about any other items you can think of, have at one time or another, been made from leather. While most people no longer wear leather loin cloths (at least not in public anyway), live in leather covered huts, tie their coin bag to their belt, or carry around their own leather water bag strapped over their shoulder, leather still has an integral part in our daily lives. It has certainly been a part of my life as far back as I can remember, although some of my first experiences with leather at various periods during my youth are better left for the dustbin of history. (What can I say? I was a mischievous child.)
My first forays into working with leather occurred when I was a groupie for a southern country band in my early adult years. On one weekend excursion to visit them, I happened into a leather craft shop and was almost immediately taken with that famous leather smell and all the tools, implements, and leathers piled in bins and on viewing tables, and purchased a few belt blanks, some stamping tools and a book on leather tooling. Many belt blanks, tooling errors, and dye stained hands later, I began making belts for others. Between times when I would beg the leader of the band to let me get on stage and sing with them, I would pay for my trips to see them by making and selling leather western style belts in the pubs where they performed, using belt blanks purchased from my local leather shop. I can distinctly remember the pounding sounds of my hammer against the metal stamping tools as I worked the designs into the leather and the complaints of my neighbors at night banging on my door and telling me to stop making so much noise. These days we use rubber mats under our marble pounding boards in a workshop, instead of my bedroom, so we don't keep the neighbors awake at night.
As I progressed through life and career, working with leather became an on-again, off-again hobby many times getting shoved aside in favor of life, work and other pursuits, until 2010, when I was having a discussion with a friend in the fashion business about leather goods. That conversation and the subsequent research and exploration of leather goods in the market today led me on a journey that has become the products you currently see on this website.
This journey has taken us from our original products focused on mobile device cases made from exotic leathers to a full line of men's leather accessories where we focus on making unique product designs using a variety of leather textures and colors. We believe in making leather goods with three things in mind: design, functionality and quality.
I know you have many choices of places to look for leather goods, and let's face it, there is not much that can be done to alter the function of a man's leather wallet to make it revolutionary. However, we strive to stand out in the crowd by making quality leather goods using a variety of leathers, colors and textures, and back up our products with great customer service. I thank you for taking the time to browse our product selections and hope that you find something that appeals to you either now or the next time you need a gift for a special man on a special occasion
